Benefits of Massage

Get ready to relax and feel great with a massage
Lying face down on a table … a cozy, warm room … soft lights and plink-plink music … and an amazing masseuse working out all of those kinks, leaving you relaxed and pain-free.  Ah, massages are one of the best things on earth.
The health benefits of massage have been well-documented.  Yes, they leave you feeling calm and centered, but they also do way more than that. According to the Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals page, massage can
  • Alleviate low-back pain
  • Improve range of motion of joints
  • Help expectant mothers with shorter delivery and post-partum hospital stays
  • Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow
  • Lessen depression and anxiety
  • Improve circulation
  • Relieve migrain pain
  • Help athletes prepare for and recover from strenuous workouts
  • Release endorphins to make us feel great!
That is quite a list!  So how do you find a good massage therapist?  Here are some things to look for.
Credentials.  Your bodyworker should be certified not only to perform but also to teach massage (this means they really know their stuff).  They should also have training (and usually another certification) in the type of massage that you’re paying for.  Being trained in sports massage doesn’t mean one knows how to do Thai massage, so make sure they have the proper education to work on you.
Referrals.  Friends who get massages regularly will be able to steer you to good people in your area. You can also get good referrals from a physical therapist, chiropractor, or sports coach.  Ask around to find the right fit for you.
Know what you want.  Do you like it hard or soft?  Sounds like the beginning of a joke, but deep sports massage work is usually painful.  You may find such massages torturous (I do) and opt for Swedish or Thai, which manipulates the body in a more gentle way.  There is no right or wrong answer; both give great results. It’s knowing what suits you best that counts.
Give yourself enough time.  It’s best if you can rest immediately after a massage.  Go home, put your feet up, even take a nap.  If you can, try to schedule a massage on a day when you can totally unplug and relax to get the full benefits.
