3 Day Sugar Detox

Solution: The Sugar Detox says it can help us kick the habit
Go cold turkey: We've become addicted to the sweet stuff but the Sugar Detox says it can help us kick the habit

THREE DAY SUGAR DETOX PLAN

DAY ONE
Breakfast: Three scrambled eggs
Mid-morning snack: Nuts
Lunch: Poached Chicken Breast with mixed baby greens and half an avocado
Afternoon snack: Sliced peppers with two tablespoons of spinach hummus
Dinner: Edamame, salmon with stir-fried broccoli and mushrooms

DAY TWO
Breakfast: Three eggs scrambled with sautéed spinach
Snack: Nuts
Lunch: Tuna Niçoise salad
Snack: Sliced peppers with hummus
Dinner: Pork tenderloin, sautéed Brussels sprouts and mushrooms with lettuce salad and avocado

DAY THREE
Breakfast: Three-egg omelette with shrimp, sautéed spinach and tarragon
Snack: Nuts
Lunch: Grilled turkey burger with sliced tomatoes, lettuce, and sautéed mushrooms, plus kale chips
Snack: Sliced peppers with hummus
Dinner: Baked cod over bok choy and mixed greens

Drinks allowed over the three days: One cup of unsweetened black coffee per day, unsweetened green and/or herbal tea in unlimited amounts, minimum 64 ounces of water a day
This means for the first three days, breakfast consists of eggs - scrambled or poached - lunch is salads, such as tuna nicoise or poached chicken on a bed of leaves, and dinner comes in the form of protein, such as grilled fish, chicken or Tofu, with a selection of vegetables.
The only snacks allowed over the three days include nuts and pepper sticks with hummus and you can only drink green/herbal tea and one black coffee with no added sugar per day (along with lots of water that can be jazzed up with a slice of lime).
While they admit sticking to the plan is not easy, they believe going 'cold turkey' and cutting out all sugar - including that found in fruit - for three days is necessary to set people on the right path.
They explain the rationale: 'After seeing the Three-Day Sugar Fix meal plan and shopping list, you might think that the Sugar Detox is just another low-carb diet.
'It’s true that the Three-Day Sugar Fix doesn’t allow you any bread, rice, or pasta, but that is because starchy carbohydrates are a major contributor to sugar addiction.
'We replace them with good carbohydrates that are full of fiber, come from vegetables, and can actually help lower your blood sugar. You may also have noticed that we’re not offering a low-carbohydrate diet where you can eat tons of fatty protein, such as bacon and steak.
'Instead, we give you lean, low-fat protein options and plenty of vegetables that will fill you up without weighing you down and clogging your arteries.'
After the initial three-day detox, some sugar is then re-introduced as the diet progresses to make it more manageable.

Unsweeten your life! Sample recipes from the Sugar Detox by Chef Jason Brown

Baked Chicken with Asparagus and Mushroom
SERVES 4
  • 4 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro/coriander
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 whole chicken breasts
For the salad...
  • 1 pound asparagus, base trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 pound sliced mushrooms (e.g., cremini, shiitake)
  • 1 pound spinach, washed well
  • Lemon wedges
For the fresh raspberry dressing...
  • ¼ cup/2 fl. ounces almond oil
  • ¼ cup/2 ounces fresh raspberries, mashed with a fork
  • ½ teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary
  • ¾ cup/6 fl. ounces champagne vinegar
  • ½ teaspoons salt
  • ½ teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
Place the cilantro/coriander, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in a large bowl and mix well. Place the chicken in this mixture, cover, and refrigerate for 1 hour. At the half-hour point, preheat the oven to 375°F. Remove the chicken from its marinade, place in a single layer in a baking tray, and bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until done. Discard the remaining marinade. While the chicken is baking, prepare the salad: Toss the asparagus in 1 tablespoon of the olive oil and half of each of the salt and pepper, place in a separate baking tray, and roast for 8 to 10 minutes or until tender. Do the same for the mushrooms, separately, using the remaining tablespoon of olive oil and remaining salt and pepper. Prepare the dressing: Place all the ingredients for the salad dressing in a small bowl and whisk together well. When chicken is done, toss the spinach in the salad dressing to coat. Divide the spinach among four plates. Split up the vegetables evenly among the four plates. Add the chicken and serve with lemon wedges.

For dessert... Grilled (Barbecued) Stone Fruit with Cinnamon-Spiced Ricotta Cheese
SERVES 4
  • 4 peaches, plums, or nectarines, halved and pitted
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup/8 ounces part-skim ricotta cheese
  • Fresh mint sprigs, for garnish
Preheat a grill/barbecue to medium high. Brush the fruit with the olive oil. Place on the hot grill and grill until marks appear, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Combine the cinnamon and ricotta in a small bowl. Top each half of fruit with the ricotta mixture. Garnish with a mint sprig.
