The Vitamin That Improves Breathing

Many people who exercise experience wheezing, coughing and bronchoconstriction, making it hard to breathe. But researchers have discovered a vitamin that opens up breathing passages and reduces the breathing problem often called exercise-induced asthma.
Researchers at the University of Helsinki discovered that vitamin C substantially eases the uncomfortable bronchoconstriction brought on by physical activity.
Previously, vitamin C has been shown to cut the incidence of common colds in people enduring heavy short-term physical stress by about 50 percent. The Helsinki study looked at vitamin C’s effect on bronchoconstriction caused by exercise and identified three relevant randomized placebo-controlled trials. Each of the three trials found that vitamin C improved what is called forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) that had been compromised during exercise challenge tests. The pooled estimate of vitamin C effect indicated a 48 percent reduction in the FEV1 decline caused by exercise.
