Comparing Three K-Beauty Mascaras
Picture this: It’s Monday morning and you’re running late for work. You only have 15 minutes to get dressed and put on makeup. Which makeup products will you use to look put-together?
If you ask me, I’d grab three products − mascara, blush and lip gloss − with mascara being at the top of my list.
As I have long lashes and love testing out different mascaras, I decided to try CLIO’s Kill Lash Superproof Mascara, peripera’s Ink Black Cara AD and ETUDE’s Curl Fix Mascara. I also used UNLEASHIA’s X2 Double Eyelash Curler to prep and curl my lashes before applying each mascara for review.
UNLEASHIA – X2 Double Eyelash Curler
What it is: UNLEASHIA’s X2 Double Eyelash Curler instantly gives lashes a natural upward lift. Compared to regular metal eyelash curlers, this eyelash curler comes with a spring-loaded design and soft silicone padding to prevent pulling or damaging your lashes when you curl them.
Initial thoughts: If you have straight or downward-facing lashes like me, this eyelash curler will give your lashes a more pronounced lift! Ever since I started wearing makeup, eyelash curlers have been part of my beauty essentials. Curling my lashes opens up my eyes, giving them a livelier look. This UNLEASHIA eyelash curler sits comfortably on my lids and gently curls my lash hairs. It creates a beautiful C-curl shape.
CLIO – Kill Lash Superproof Mascara – (Long Curling)
Lash effect: Lengthening and curling
What it is: CLIO’s Kill Lash Superproof Mascara in the Long Curling version offers a lightweight and buildable formula that adds length and volume to lashes without weighing them down. Its smooth, liquid consistency allows easy and controlled application. The mascara is available in other versions including #00 Slim Fixing, #02 Volume Curling and #10 Clear Curl.
Initial thoughts: When it comes to mascaras, the desired lash effect − whether it’s lengthening, curling or volumizing − greatly depends on the wand design. I chose this lengthening mascara for its promise of a long, wispy finish reminiscent of lash extensions.
Out of the three mascaras I tried in this beauty review, CLIO’s mascara wand appears to be the thinnest and straightest. The slightly curved brush made it easy to evenly coat my lash hairs without clumping or flaking. I’m genuinely impressed with this mascara as it lengthens my lashes while still maintaining a natural look.
peripera’s Ink Black Cara AD (Long Lash Curling)
Lash effect: Lengthening, curling and volumizing
What it is: peripera’s Ink Black Cara AD delivers a beautiful lash extension effect that stays curled and lifted all day long. Its lightweight and smudge-proof formula ensures all-day wear, while the mascara wand’s curved bristles help you achieve a defined and dramatic eye look. Also comes in #02 Volume Curling and #03 Clear Set versions.
Initial thoughts: From the moment I saw this mascara’s densely packed bristles, I knew that the lash finish would be too thick for my liking. peripera’s mascara formulation falls on the heavier side, which is why I often got frustrated by my lashes clumping together during application. Even after the mascara fully dried, I frequently experienced my upper and lower lashes sticking together when I blinked.
Though this mascara doesn’t tick my boxes, if you seek a more volumized finish with great lengthening and curling effects, I encourage you to give it a go. I let my mom try it and she became a fan of the Ink Black Cara AD because she prefers thicker and fuller-looking lashes!
ETUDE’s Curl Fix Mascara – (Volume Mascara)
Lash effect: Volumizing and curling
What it is: This long-lasting and waterproof mascara featuring a C-curl wand delivers high-impact curl and volume to lashes without smudging or flaking. The formula spreads easily and evenly on lashes for a lifted appearance with definition. Available in four versions.
Initial thoughts: If you want to achieve a fluttery, doll-like lash finish, this mascara is a great pick! During my three-week trial, I often found myself reaching for this mascara whenever I wanted to keep my lashes natural yet a bit extra! ETUDE’s long and curved brush defines and separates my lashes evenly, giving them a perfectly fanned-out finish.
What makes me especially love this mascara is that I used it during my vacation, and it didn’t budge or bleed even amid sweltering heat and salty ocean water!
Important Reminders
Prepping your lashes
Make sure your lashes are dry before using an eyelash curler to sustain the curled and lifted look. Curling your lashes while wet will cause them to eventually fall back to their original shape and prevent you from getting the perfect lash lifting effect.
Applying mascara
Avoid blinking too much or pushing the mascara wand too close to your lids while applying mascara. Doing so will increase the likelihood of smudging mascara onto your lids. Apply mascara using upward motions. Slowly wiggle the mascara wand from side to side in a horizontal manner, starting from the roots to the tip of lashes.
Removing mascara
All three mascaras I tested in this review are waterproof and smudge-proof. While these are important qualities for a long-wear mascara, it also means that removing the mascara can be a struggle. For a faster and easier mascara removal process, use a product specifically formulated for eye makeup removal such as micellar eye makeup remover or an oil-based mascara remover.
