Feed Your Face: Make an Aphrodisiac Valentine's Day Meal
Are you stressed out just thinking about Valentine’s Day? Me, too. There's so much pressure to have a romantic evening, and you have to put up with extra-high prices and crowded restaurants. This year, try doing something creative and romantic at home by cooking a romantic dinner that features aphrodisiacs! Aphrodisiacs are herbs, spices, vegetables, fruits, and other ingredients that people have used for centuries to heighten their sexual desire, drive, and performance. While the effects of aphrodisiacs are not scientifically proven, many people believe in their efficacy, and that may be all you need! Here are some romantic ideas to help put you and your sweetie in the mood for love.
Hors d'oeuvres: Pick up some preshucked oysters at your local fish shop or fancy food market. Oysters are a legendary aphrodisiac, in part because they contain a lot of zinc, which is thought to boost the sex drive. Top them with a spicy sauce for an extra kick — the capsaicin in peppers is a stimulant.
Entrées: Spicy foods in general are considered to be aphrodisiacs. Mexican food is a great choice because it usually contains chili peppers, garlic, and avocados — all reputed aphrodisiacs. If you like Italian better, try making a simple pasta all'arrabbiata, which is made with penne and a spicy tomato sauce containing garlic, red chili pepper flakes, and guanciale (pig's cheek, but you can also use diced bacon). Enjoy it with a salad of spicy arugula and fresh fennel (two more aphrodisiacs!). If you don't care for spicy food, make a simple tomato sauce with the aphrodisiacs garlic, onions, and basil.
Dessert: Strawberries dipped in dark chocolate are a deliciously decadent passion-inducing sweet. Strawberries have an erotic reputation because of their likeness to nipples, and the chocolate stimulates the brain's neurotransmitters and endorphins ("feel good" chemicals). This dessert is also full of skin-friendly antioxidants. Feed these strawberries to each other and see what happens!
I hope you have a truly romantic Valentine's Day!
