3 Things Everyone Who Wears Blush Needs to Know

3 Things Everyone Who Wears Blush Needs to Know

It may seem like a no-brainer, but applying rouge can be a real challenge. Here are three steps to getting it right.

3 Things Everyone Who Wears Blush Needs to Know
Last week I was asked by three separate women just how to wear blush (on the same day!). Then, only one day later, I met a friend for lunch and our waitress’ blush was placed so disastrously that I was too distracted to finish our conversation.
It seems that many women in their mid-30s and up (I’m in this category BTW!) remember the days of yesteryear when our moms taught us to apply blush by sucking in our cheeks and applying the color to the bony part sticking out. Our waitress was definitely making a fish face when she applied her blush that morning.
Friends, this way of applying blush is not necessarily wrong (in fact, a good contour is sometimes achieved this way), but allow me to suggest a more beautiful means of application.
1. Don’t suck in—puff upBlush should mimmick a natural flush. Smile so cheesily that the meatiest part of your cheeks is visible in your peripheral vision when you glance downward.
2. Fluff on your puffUse a fluffy blush brush to apply the blush of choice (my current favorite is Nars The Multiple in Portofino) to the direct center of the apples of your cheeks (aka the meatiest part as indicated above). The strongest color should remain in the center.
3. Blend out to nothingAfter you apply the color to the center of your apples, dust the residual color off of your brush onto a paper towel. Now use the clean brush to feather the color outward from the center of your cheeks toward your temples and jaw in a circular motion until the color fades into nothing.
