Why Clay Needs to Be on Your Cleansing Radar

What comes to mind when you think of cleansers? Luxe oil, sudsy foam, and drugstore washes you’ve used since you were 13, most likely. But what if we told you one of the best cleansers we’ve used is actually none of the above? Forget everything you know about cleansing and enter bareMinerals Clay Chameleon Transforming Purifying Cleanser ($22, ulta.com). You might typically associate clay with spa masks, but the mud-like substance is actually the hero ingredient for this clay-to-cream cleanser. Albeit and unexpected option, it’s quickly becoming our go-to choice for our daily cleansing ritual.

Formulated with Brazilian red clay, mineral-rich sea salts, papaya, and bamboo extracts, this is definitely a cocktail of good-for-your-skin ingredients. The sea salts and red clay help with washing away impurities and leave skin feeling squeaky clean, yet not at all taut or dry—a common side effect of clay or salts. To use, simply apply a dollop of the clay all over the face. Unlike typical spa clay masks that leave a thick layer and then harden, this formula remains soft and spreadable. Next, as you begin to massage in the product, it slowly transforms into a creamy cleanser. It even lathers a bit for a more traditional cleansing experience! Lastly, wash off the cream and follow up with moisturizer or serum.

We’ve been using the cleanser for a week straight—especially in the morning as a little calming wake-me-up before we pour our coffee—and so far, we’ve noticed our skin feeling supple and hydrated. (Almost as if we’ve done a face mask every day for a week!) Although we prefer the clay for a morning ritual, it’s also ideal for a nighttime wind down. Just a heads up though, if you’re using at night, you will need to remove your makeup before applying the product. It’s more of a true cleanser as opposed to a do-it-all like micellar water or oil. Either way, lather up and enjoy!
