New Cleansers That Are Way Beyond Your Basic Face Wash

Winter has officially arrived (especially in the Northeast), and with that major temperature dip comes the threat of some seriously dry skin. Add to this equation a lovely whipping wind that follows you around wherever you walk, and you're guaranteed a need for moisture-relief. Lucky for you and me, there's a whole new class of cleansers designed to keep skin hydrated. They throw that whole oil-stripping thing out the door. So tell your old face wash sorry, and add one of these beauty editor-approved oils, balms, or creams to your bathroom shelves, stat. Your face will thank you.

The best new cleansing oils:

Caudalie Make-up Removing Cleansing Oil ($28, sephora.com)
Tons of cleansing oils remove makeup, but this one features a nourishing cocktail of sweet almond, grape-seed, and sunflower seed oil to also keep your skin soft. "I apply a few pumps of it, then sit in front of the TV and massage it in for a few minutes," says beauty writer Kate Erickson. "It feels like a mini facial." Another plus? The formula also contains castor oil, which keeps your eyelashes strong and lustrous.

Avene XeraCalm A.D. Lipid-Replenishing Cleansing Oil ($30, dermstore.com)
Given its size (nearly 14 oz., about as big as a standard shampoo bottle) and the fact that you can use it on your body as well as your face, this is the kind of product you'll want to keep in the shower. It's made with Avene's trademark formula to help calm itching and redness (key if you have sensitive skin, eczema, or psoriasis) and evening primrose oil to leave skin feeling soft.

cleansers-skincare-face-wash-2

Bare Minerals Oil Obsessed Total Cleansing Oil ($30, ulta.com)
The word "obsessed" in the name of this oil is no joke, because I cannot get enough of the lavender and tangerine scent. It's exactly the pick-me-up you need in morning, especially in the dead of winter. Sunflower and cucumber oil lock in hydration, while mineral-rich sea salts gently purify your skin.

The best new creamy cleansers:

milky-jelly-cleanser-skincare

Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser ($18, glossier.com)
Is it milky? Is it jelly? Or is it gooky? All of the above, but in the most satisfying way possible. It's creamy gel consistency feels luxurious when you massage it in—with or without water. "In the morning, I apply it on damp skin for a soothing, refreshing wake up," says beauty assistant Jen Mulrow. "At night, I apply to my skin without water and watch it dissolve even the most stubborn makeup (mascara, be warned!). While some cleansers leave a tight, squeaky-clean feeling, this one always leaves my skin feeling more moisturized than it did before."

cleanser-skincare-face-wash-9

Frank Body Creamy Face Cleanser ($20, frankbody.com)
The gray color of this vegan cleanser might be off-putting at first, but don't let it scare you. It contains charcoal (which binds to dirt and impurities like a magnet to remove even the deepest gunk out of your pores) and green coffee bean extract (the caffeine boost firms up the appearance of your skin). Oh, and how cute is the bottle? Come on.

cleansers-skincare-face-wash-5

Yes To Coconut Ultra Hydrating Creme Cleanser ($8, ulta.com)
If you like the smell of coconuts, but you don't like to be hit over the head with it, meet your new best friend. You've probably heard about the benefits of coconut oil (its fatty acids keep skin smooth and hydrated), but unlike raw coconut oil, this doesn't leave a greasy after-feel. It's great if you prefer just a light cleanse in the morning.

It's great if you prefer just a light cleanse in the morning.
The best new cleansing balms:
cleanser-face-oil

Erborian Solid Cleansing Oil ($39, sephora.com)
This magical balm is based on the Korean double cleansing method where you first use an oil to remove makeup, then use a skin-type-specific formula to get rid of bacteria and sweat. "I love the ritual of putting this balm on at night—it feels so nice, it actually makes me want to wash my face instead of lazily reaching for a makeup wipe," says senior digital beauty editor Lindsay Schallon. "I rub a dime-size amount of the solid balm between my palms to warm up the oil, and then massage it onto my face in small circles. When you rinse it off, the oil turns into a creamy lotion, so your skin feels soft and smooth."

Peter Thomas Roth Gold Cleansing Butter ($55, sephora.com)
This cleansing balm is my congratulations-you-made-it-through-a-tundra-of a-week-treat to myself—it's infused with 24-karat gold. The gold actually serves a purpose, though: It has anti-inflammatory benefits, which works wonders for windswept skin. It also comes with a sponge that makes it all the more fun to lather on.

cleansers-skincare-face-wash-3

PIXI by Petra Nourishing Cleansing Balm ($20, pixibeauty.com)
This cleansing balm is packed with sweet almond oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter, so you know you're getting a moisture boost while you get rid of dirt and makeup. I massage it into my skin using my hands, then I use a muslin cloth to gently remove any excess balm. This action gently sloughs away flaky dry skin and leaves a thin layer of the balm lingering on my skin.
