6 Beauty Products You’re Too Scared to Try (But Shouldn’t Be!)

If you’re the type of person who sticks to the tried-and-true rather than experimenting with the latest and greatest, we won’t hold it against you. We do, however, encourage you to try your hand at a few seemingly “intimidating” beauty products that are really anything but. Once you get the hang of it, it’ll be as easy as applying your favorite lip gloss… and until then, you’re totally missing out.
Oil Cleanser
Oil” and “cleanser” sound like they’d be on opposite sides of the skin care spectrum, but not so. While slathering oil on your face to remove oil, makeup, dirt, and debris may sound unsavory (and counterproductive), it’s actually anything but. Oil cleansers are the perfect way to cleanse your skin without disrupting its natural balance of—you guessed it—oil.
Exfoliating Powder
The standard exfoliator gets stripped down with this incarnation, which takes the fine grains of a scrub and enables you to mix them with water, serum, oil, or whatever base you like before rubbing into skin. It’s almost like a chemistry set or a bespoke treatment because you can tailor the formula to your skin’s needs, adding as much or as little of the powder as you want before combining with water or a more moisturizing liquid.
Chemical Peels
We don’t mean to sound harsh, but we will say this: If you’re still too scared to dabble in acid-based skin care, then now is the time to get over it. Even the most sensitive skin types can make use of a chemical peel, which use (skin-safe!) acids to brighten, smooth, treat breakouts, and improve dark spots and uneven tone. If you’ve never used a chemical treatment, you’ll be literally amazed by how much they can improve the look of your skin after just one use.
Liquid Lipstick
There’s a whole new category of lip product on the market, and they have the smooth, easy application of a gloss, the color impact of a lipstick, and the staying power of a super-powered stain. Liquid lipsticks often dry down to a matte finish, and they really stick around without causing the dryness and flaking that long-wear lip colors are infamous for.
Brow Powder
Brow pencils and markers may be “easier”—and easier to travel with—than slightly less user-friendly powder, which requires a brush for application. Once you try it, though, you’ll never go back. Powders are unrivaled in their ability to recreate the soft, natural appearance of brow hairs, especially if your brows are sparse or you’d like to create a shape or arch that isn’t actually there. Yes, a brush will take up a little more room in your makeup bag, but it’s worth it. Very worth it.
Gel Liner
Just the sight of the traditional pot and brush that go with gel liner is enough to earn a “no thanks,” from a makeup novice (and even some more advanced individuals), but maybe it’s time to reconsider. It’s no super simple pencil liner, but gel formulas have more pigment and way, way more staying power than any of their competitors. We insist that if you’ve ever used a paintbrush, you can execute a perfect gel liner cat eye. Just give it a try.
