Essential Oils of the Bible – Frankincense

You all know that I am in LOVE with my essential oils!  We use them throughout the day…every single day.  If you haven’t read our story, click here to pop on over there and read for yourself the impact they have made in our lives.
You also know that I am passionate about God and delivering his message.
So, I thought it would be cool to put my two passions together and tell you about

Essential Oils of the Bible

Essential oils are mentioned more than 500 times in the Bible. They are in 36 of the 39 books of the Old Testament and 10 of the 27 books of the New Testament.
Over the next several weeks, I am going to share information with you about the oils that were common during biblical times. Their history, where they come from, what they were used for then, and what they are used for today.
I hope you enjoy this series and when you are ready to chat about how essential oils can help you, click here to schedule some one-on-one time with me to go over your specific needs.
I thought I would start with one of the most well know oils of the Bible –

Frankincense

This is one of my all-time favorite Essential Oils.  I use it every single day and it is the one I go to when I’m not sure what to use.
Frankincense has a long history of use in religious ceremonies and for medicinal purposes.  One of the oldest medical documents known to man, the Papyrus Ebers, was written around 1500 BC (it is believed that it is a copyFrankincense-Trail of earlier text dating back as far as 3400 BC) and records the use of Frankincense for treatment of disease and illness.
Frankincense held great value during ancient times and was treasured by Pharaohs and Caesars. The Frankincense Trail was used for 3000 years before the birth of Christ and is 2400 miles long, running from the Southern coast of Oman to the Holy Lands and Petra. Camel caravans–a caravan consisted of 6,000 camels–traveled this trail trading Frankincense.  According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization,
Pastoral nomads settled in southern Arabia around 6000 BCE and are credited with starting the long distance trading routes.  They first began trading frankincense from Dhofar in response to a demand from southern Mesopotamia. By 3200 BCE, with the introduction of writing, there is evidence that trade in frankincense increased in volume and frequency. The specific ethnic identity of the traders is unknown, but distinctive flint types link the trade specifically to Dhofar.
Frankincense is mentioned, by name, 16 times in the Bible – one such mention is very well known…
11 They entered the house and saw the child with Mary his mother. Falling to their knees, they honored him. Then they opened their treasure chests and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  — Mat 2:11
Most of the mentions of Frankincense are from the Old Testament and have to do with offerings to the Lord. Below are some examples which provide further evidence of the high value placed on Frankincense.
34 The LORD said to Moses: Take an equal amount of each of these spices: gum resin, onycha, galbanum, and pure frankincense. 35 Like a skilled perfume maker, carefully blend them together and make incense, seasoned with salt, pure and holy. 36 Beat some of it into a fine powder and put part of it in front of the covenant document in the meeting tent where I will meet with you. You should regard it as perfectly holy. 37 When you make incense according to this formula, you shouldn’t make any of it for your own use. You should regard it as holy to the LORD. 38 Whoever makes incense with this same formula to enjoy its fragrance will be cut off from the people.    – Exo 30:34-38
When anyone presents a grain offering to the LORD, the offering must be of choice flour. They must pour oil on it and put frankincense on it, 2 then bring it to Aaron’s sons, the priests. A priest will take a handful of its choice flour and oil, along with all of its frankincense, and will completely burn this token portion on the altar as a food gift of soothing smell to the LORD. The rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons as a most holy portion from the LORD ‘s food gifts.  — Lev 2:1-3
14 If you present a grain offering to the LORD from the first produce, you must make such an offering from the crushed heads of newly ripe grain, roasted with fire. 15 You must put oil and frankincense on it; it is a grain offering. 16 The priest will completely burn the token portion—some of the crushed new grain and oil along with all of the frankincense—as a food gift for the LORD.  — Lev 2:14-16
You will take choice flour and bake twelve loaves of flatbread, two- tenths of an ephah for each loaf. 6 You must place them in two stacks, six in a stack, on the pure table before the LORD. 7Put pure frankincense on each stack, as a token portion for the bread; it is a food gift for the LORD. 8 Aaron will always set it out before the LORD, Sabbath after Sabbath, on behalf of the Israelites, as a permanent covenant. 9 It will belong to Aaron and his sons. They must eat it in a holy place because it is the most holy part of their share of the LORD ‘s food gifts, a permanent portion.  –  Lev 24:5-9
Visions of grandeur
Who is this, coming up from the wilderness,
like pillars of smoke?
She is perfumed with myrrh and frankincense,
selected from all the spice merchant’s powders.
–Song of Songs 3:6

Monoterpenes also increase the level of liver enzymes involved in removing carcinogenic toxins and interferes with the cancer process. Frankincense also contains sesquiterpenes, which make it able to go beyond the blood-brain barrier and may help oxygenate the pineal and pituitary glands. It increases the activity of leukocytes, defending the body against infection. Frankincense may also help a person have a better attitude, which may help to strengthen the immune system.
Dr. David Hill – dōTERRA Chief Medical Advisor and Chairman, Scientific Advisory Board - recommends using Frankincense on a daily basis by placing 2-3 drops under your tongue both morning and night.

To me, Frankincense is the oil of oils – it helps our body remember how to be perfect – the cells, the tissues, the organs, the systems, the whole body – even our minds and hearts.
