It is Important to Take a Skincare Break

Between your morning skin-care routine, evening skincare routine and wearing makeup during the day, it can feel like you’re constantly slathering products on to your skin's surface. Beauty devotees are not known to go without their precious products. But it raises the question: How good is this habit for your skin? Doing my research and my own knowledge of skincare and makeup. You need too. I have been on a hiatus with Retin A for 6 months. I am about to start back up next month. I also do skincare rotations on my favorite brands. Plus seasonal skincare is a must. Because every season your skin is different. Requires different ingredients in your products.

There are differing professional opinions around this subject. Some dermatologists say it is a must others say stick to your regimen you have been doing years and years. I feel you need to take a break and use milder products for awhile. Let your skin breath.  A good time to do this when working out. Go product free. Let the sweat come out of the pores. Cleanses and detoxes.

However, dry skin types should be cautious when attempting a skin detox. One of the biggest components of skin-care is moisturization. Dry skin is subject to barrier breakdown and malfunction with resultant inflammation, oxidation and degradation. So use a very mild moisturizer.  I have a few brands that are very basic and just have ceramides. A great store brand is . Or a good simple facial oil to moisturize. And Dr C Tuna Absolute Elixir is one for every skintype.

People with oily skin have the most to gain from taking a product break . Those with oily skin should take breaks regularly, as products can clog pores.

This is not to say that you should go without the most important product in your skin-care regimen: sunscreen.  SPF 30 or higher should never be skipped. Unprotected skin is subject to increased damage from sun and wind exposure.

If you experience peeling, rashes, redness or irritation, it may be a sign that the skin-care products you’re using are not a right fit. If the skin needs a break from products in a specific regimen, it may be a sign that your regimen needs to be altered or replaced, not paused. Products in consideration of intermittent discontinuation may not be worth using in the first place. A huge reason I am a product tester for several companies is to help out others on great products to try themselves. Or products to be introduced while on a break from your typical regimen. See my reviews on Instagram and here on Wordpress.  Do you break from your regimen? Do you need help with a new clean skincare routine? Reach out to me and I can help you with clean amazing skincare!
