Allowed and forbidden foods

The list of allowed and forbidden foods includes:

Fruits                                                         Fresh, frozen, or canned fruits (in water), fruit juices. No sugar should be added. Oranges, grapefruit, banana,   strawberries and melons. Fruit juices (with sugar) and dried fruit                
Starch Brown rice, quinoa, teff, buckwheat Wheat, corn, oats, barley, rye, and all products with gluten
Meat and fish All fish, all poultry Beef, pork, cold meats, sausage, egg and shellfish
Legumes All dried beans (excluding soy) All soy products
Nuts and Seeds Almonds, walnuts, sesame, sunflower. Butters made from these seeds Peanuts (and peanut butter), pistachios
Dairy Products Milk substitutes but not soy
milk; kefir
Milk, all types of cheese (including hard and soft cheeses), butter, cream, yogurt and ice cream
Vegetables All vegetables raw or cooked, except specific cases (certain conditions may require specific vegetables to be eliminated) Canned vegetables
Fats Fats rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as olive oil, canola, sesame, walnut and any dressings with these oils Fats rich in saturated fatty acids. Including butter, shortening, and spreads
Beverages water and herbal tea (8 cups daily) Fizzy and alcoholic drinks, all drinks containing caffeine (tea and coffee)
Spices All spices except pepper, paprika and curry Pepper, curry and paprika

Simple ingredients, like milk or strawberries, are easy to identify, but in some cases, foods with more than one ingredient may be more difficult to judge. Here are some examples to watch out for:
  • Syrup is common in drinks and pre-prepared foods
  • Condiments, like mayonnaise or ketchup, contain vinegar usually extracted from corn or wheat
  • Canned tuna may contain soy. Always look for 100% tuna.
  • Rice cakes may have various grains. Always check the label.
  • Baking powder may contain scorn starch
  • Even breads marketed as gluten-free can contain oats or rye
