How to achieve a perfect eyeliner look

February 8, 2012
I’m often asked how I get my eyeliner so perfect. I’d love to say that I am just naturally talented. I’d tell stories of emerging from the womb with super eyelining abilities and proudly declare that I  have been sent to save the word from cat eye tragedies.  That, however, is not the case.  All the credit goes to the eyeliners themselves.  MAC  Fluidline and Lancomes Artliner are responsible for this flawless eye look.
I’ve tried all kinds of liquid eyeliners, but I could never get the defined lines I wanted on my eyes.

I couldn’t work well with the standard applicators the liquid eyeliners came with, so I took my MAC  #209 Angled Brow Brush (most versatile brush—my fav!), dipped it in my Fluidline and went to work.  It literally glides onto your eyelids and the combination of the gel with the #209 brush makes it foolproof.  If I want a thick line, I’ve got it.  A thin line?  Easy! I’m constantly doing winged or cat eyes and its much easier getting a precise line with the Fluidline.  (If you do not want to invest in MAC,  Lancome,Loreal HIP Cream Eyeliner glides on smoothly and comes with its own angled brush for easy application.)

I have the tendency to leave my Fluidline uncovered (oops!), which dries up the gel.  No problem—I’ve got a quick and easy fix so it’s not wasted.  I take my #209 brush,GENTLY dip it into petroleum jelly (a.k.a Vaseline –my godsend for everything, but that’s another blog post!) and then dip it into the Fluidline.  This helps to soften the gel and makes it usable again; it also darkens the gel to give it a more polished  look.
OK, now for the dirty work.  I ALWAYS run my brush over the back of my hand before I start lines on my eyes.  You don’t want too much liner on your brush, so starting off small always helps.  Think of painting —it’s the same concept.  So, the order goes: Vaseline –hand – Fluidline –hand –eye.

Everyone has their own method for applying eyeliner —there is no wrong way, but this has always worked for me.  I start from the CENTER of my eyelid and move towards the end of my eye and then to the inside corner of my eye.  I’m always EXTREMELY careful with the inside corner because that’s usually the thinnest part of the line.  Since I use very little gel on my brush I have to go over my line a few times to get the exact depth that I desire.
Let me know your eyeliner secrets —I LOVE learning new methods and tricks!
