Coconut Water and Cures for Dry Skin

by NewBeauty Staff

No matter the season, dehydrated skin is an all-too-common skin complaint—one that can plague just about any skin type, at any age. Luckily, for those that suffer from extremely dry skin, the condition can be cured.

Most of us reach for an array of moisturizing lotions, creams and serums to enrich dry skin. But, there are several easy-to-adopt lifestyle changes that can hydrate your complexion and keep it that way, like using a humidifier to reduce moisture-loss caused by the environment. How you hydrate your body from the inside can also help your skin stay moisturized on the outside.

Touted as the natural alternative to sports drinks, the electrolyte-concentrated juice that’s derived from coconuts has been branded and bottled by many companies—some of which claim coconut water can help hydrate the skin from the inside out via its nutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. But are these claims legit? "Coconut water has some oils from the coconut milk that are part of the essential ingredients for a healthy skin barrier," says West Palm Beach, FL, dermatologist Kenneth R. Beer, MD. "Drinking it may help a little, but not as much as eating fresh coconut or making a face mask with it," he says.

To tackle dry skin topically, ingredients like antioxidants will not only repair dehydrated skin quicker, but will help prevent future dryness.
